Step 9: Check-In with ISSS
Upon arrival in the U.S. all F-1 and J-1 students are required to complete an immigration check-in procedure. Students already in the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status who are transferring their SEVIS record from a previous U.S. school to UNC-Chapel Hill must also complete this process. ISSS must validate arrivals of F-1 and J-1 students in SEVIS and failure to complete the check-in with ISSS could result in SEVIS termination.
ISSS Check-In is a two-step procedure that students will complete entirely online in ConnectCarolina:
|STEP 1:||Students will navigate to the “Personal Information” tile in ConnectCarolina in order to add a “SEVIS Immigration Report Address” and to update other contact info.|
|STEP 2:||Students will navigate to the “Student Center” tile in ConnectCarolina in order to access their To Do List where they will upload all required check-in documents.|

Students will receive a notification email once the check-in period for their admission term and academic program has begun. The ISSS Check-In To Do List items will not be available in ConnectCarolina until that time. Students should not initiate this process if they are not yet present in the U.S.
You will be required to submit the following check-in documents in ConnectCarolina under “General Items” on the To Do List:
- International Student Check-In Form
- Identification/Expiration page(s) of passport used to enter the U.S.
- F-1 or J-1 visa
- Form I-20 or Form DS-2019
- Form I-94
NOTE: All students are required to provide a response for the “Supplemental Documents” item, even if they are not uploading documents in this item. If this item is still showing on your To Do List, your submission is not complete and your documents will not be reviewed.
If your family members in F-2 or J-2 status have arrived in the U.S. with you, you must submit copies of the same immigration documents for each of them (passport, visa, I-20 or DS-2019, and I-94) by uploading them under Supplemental Documents. If they will arrive in the U.S. at a later point, you should complete your check-in without submitting any dependent documents. Be sure to contact your ISSS advisor once your dependent family members arrive in the U.S.
After arriving in the U.S., you will need to retrieve your Form I-94 (Arrival Record), an electronic form which you must access on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website at https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/.
To retrieve your Form I-94 on this site, click on “Get Most Recent I-94”, read the terms and click on “Consent & Continue”, enter your passport details and click on “Next”. Please save this document as a pdf so you can upload it as part of your check-in materials in ConnectCarolina.
Do NOT submit your “Travel History” as part of your check-in materials. This information will not be relevant. You must submit the I-94 record that shows your entry date as well as your immigration status at the time of entry to the U.S.
You must print a copy the I-94 record as well if you will need it for other purposes such as applying for a North Carolina driver’s license or state ID card or, if you are eligible, applying for a Social Security number (SSN).
U.S. Address Reporting
To complete ISSS Check-In, you must create or update the “SEVIS Immigration Report Address” in ConnectCarolina. You will use this field in ConnectCarolina to report your physical U.S. address to ISSS and you must always update this information any time it changes.
- The SEVIS Immigration Report Address must be a physical address (where you are staying). It cannot be a P.O. Box address. It may be different from your mailing address.
- Report the address of where you currently live even if temporary. If you move, you must report the new address within ten days of moving.

Other Contact Information
You must also report your phone number if it has changed. Confirm that the phone number listed as the “Preferred” phone number in ConnectCarolina is correct. If it is not or if you wish to report a different phone number as “Preferred” (which is the phone number that will be reported in SEVIS), correct this information or add a new number and check the box next to it to set it as “Preferred”.
F-1 and J-1 students are permitted to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year. Incoming students in F-1 status can begin working once they complete ISSS-Check In and once ISSS verifies enrollment status and completes the registration process in SEVIS. Students will receive an email confirmation from ISSS indicating they are active in SEVIS which they should present to their on-campus hiring department prior to beginning work.
J-1 students must complete the J-1 on campus employment request form and get written permission from ISSS prior to beginning work. Students in J-1 status cannot begin working prior to their program start date as indicated on the Form DS-2019.
Social Security Number (SSN)
Students employed on-campus at UNC-Chapel Hill who do not yet have a Social Security Number (SSN) must apply for this number and are required to report it to HR within 90 days.
F-1 students must request a letter from ISSS that will be needed in order to apply for the number at a Social Security Administration (SSA) office. Students should submit requests for this letter by sending the following documents via email to firstname.lastname@example.org:
- A completed Request for SSN Letter for F-1 Student*
- A letter prepared by the hiring unit/department which includes all information required by the SSA (please refer to the template for this letter)
*Do NOT submit this form unless you have a current job offer for on-campus employment.
