Exchange Visitors may remain in the U.S. either until the end-date on their DS-2019 form or until their program ends, whichever comes first.

All faculty and scholars in J-1 status requesting an extension of stay must have their department complete and submit an extension request to ISSS along with all required supporting documentation. These forms must be completed by the host department and must include all necessary signatures. The ISSS processing time for an extension is approximately two to three weeks. Failure to extend the Form DS-2019 prior to the end-date on the current form could result in loss of status and employment privileges.

J-2 dependents of Exchange Visitors are extended at the same time the J-1 is extended. When the J-1 Exchange Visitor is informed their extension is ready for pick-up at ISSS, they should receive the copies of the DS-2019 extensions for themselves and their dependents.

J-1 students on Academic Training can only obtain an extension of Form DS-2019 from their J program sponsor.

Note: Scholars who have applied for or received a waiver of the Two-Year Home Residence Requirement are not eligible for extension of J-1 status.
