The International Student and Scholar Orientation Counselor Program is designed to assist newly-arrived international students at UNC-Chapel Hill with cultural adjustment, and to provide an opportunity for intercultural exchange among students, both international and American. We are looking for undergraduates and graduate students who are willing to return to Chapel Hill a week before classes begin. This period is probably the most confusing and trying time for new foreign students, so it is very important that Orientation Counselors be available then.
There are many ways to help new students settle into their new living situations in Chapel Hill. Orientation Counselors generally help newly arrived students with setting up checking accounts, preparing for registration, buying textbooks, and general shopping needs.
When Does the Program Begin?
Our Orientation Counselor Program begins on the week before classes begin in August. Orientation counselors will be required to attend a training session prior to volunteering. Details will be sent to applicants via email.
At the training we will discuss important adjustment issues that international students face, talk about specific tasks of Orientation Counselors and spend some time preparing Orientation Packets for students checking in to the ISSS office.
Orientation Counselors will be asked to spend two to three hours each day helping with International Student Orientation. OC’s also need to help plan our International Student Welcome Party.
How to Apply
If you think you would like to be an Orientation Counselor, please complete the Orientation Counselor Application below. Applications should be submitted prior to the end of the Spring semester.
