The Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) has redesigned the immigration documents used by F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors and their dependents. All Forms I-20 (F status) and DS-2019 (J status) issued after June 26, 2015 will have a new look. SEVP updated the forms primarily to accommodate new name and address standardizations in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). While the new DS-2019 is similar to the previous version, the new I-20 looks considerably different.
All F-1 students and their family members will be issued new I-20 forms by the July 1, 2016 conversion deadline. Until that date, previously issued I-20s will continue to be valid for travel and for I-9 purposes.
Previously issued forms DS-2019 will remain valid. At this time, there is no deadline for conversion to the new DS-2019. New DS-2019s will be issued when updates to the form are needed such as extensions, transfers, changes in financial support, etc.
